Starting this Friday (3-11-23), the big(gest) screen will light up with six Imax 70mm film locations, including AMC CityWalk Stadium 19 in Hollywood, Calif.; AMC Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, Calif.; AMC Lincoln Square in New York City; AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco; BFI London in the United Kingdom; and Melbourne Museum in Australia.
These premium screens were the hottest tickets in town during the film’s initial box office run. This re-release comes at a quieter time for the box office, with no major releases on the horizon for the upcoming weekend. The highly-anticipated Disney superhero adventure, “The Marvels,” will undoubtedly take over most of the Imax screens when it hits theaters on November 10.
“Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy as the renowned “father of the atomic bomb,” has already made a staggering $946 million at the worldwide box office. Not only is it the third-highest grossing movie of the year, but it also holds the title of the second-highest grossing R-rated film in history.
During last summer’s press tour, Christopher Nolan passionately discussed the use of Imax cameras, inspiring dedicated fans to journey across state lines for the best cinematic experience. As a result, “Oppenheimer” grossed a remarkable $183 million from Imax, securing its place as the fourth-highest grossing release in Imax history.
Furthermore, it played a pivotal role in making Imax’s summer the highest-grossing season ever in 54 countries, including the United States and China. Returning “Oppenheimer” to Imax screens is no small feat. Each finished Imax film print of “Oppenheimer” stretches over a staggering 11 miles of film stock and weighs a hefty 600 lbs.
